Truck tips on corner

Kaikoura Star - - NEWS -

A truck and trailer which tipped over on the coastal road on Saturday morning south of Kaikoura crossed the centre line and hit the crash barrier, causing traffic delays for much of Saturday.

The truck tipped on to the driver’s side as it travelled south just before the twin Raramai tunnels on the narrow winding coast road.

Police were continuing the investigation into the crash, which involved checking log books to see if driving regulations were followed.

Sergeant Matt Boyce of the Kaikoura police said at this stage it was believed the truck was travelling too fast for the corner.

Don Wright of St John’s Ambulance said the male driver of the truck managed to get out of the crashed truck before medical staff arrived.

He said the driver was treated for a minor elbow injury at the scene by St John’s staff and the duty doctor, and was taken to the Kaikoura medical centre for further examination.

Downer road maintenance staff were still clearing the accident scene at 9pm, where the road was still restricted to one lane. The truck was unloaded at the scene and was towed away about 10pm.
