Racers tear it up at weekend meet

December’s grasskart meeting had the feeling of a major race day, as kart enthusiasts from Tapawera and Christchurch clubs came to compete at the South Bay track on Sunday.

The meeting also included a gymkhana, a timed run on a tight slalom course for about 26 karts which came for a hard fast track, despite a whole days rain the previous day.

The hard materials class at Kaikoura High School fabrication classes have made karts this year, and Grasskarts club president Rob Roche said he hoped the school might take on building karts as a school project next year.

‘‘The guys in Tapawera are right into it. They build karts at school and race them all the time. They’re very keen.’’
