he re-closure of State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura this week is an important step forward in making this vital piece of road safer and more reliable.
The closure will be inconvenient for some, and there never will be a perfect time to shut it down, but it is necessary that the highway is made more resilient against heavy rain and other natural factors like aftershocks, particularly as we head towards winter.
New slips along the road due to weather conditions means the NZTA has repeatedly had to close the road in the last few weeks, which has disrupted travel and also the ongoing road work itself.
We have come a long way since November 14, but there is still work to be done. Ultimately, the road needs to be at a point where it can safely be open 24 hours a day.
