Recovery project set to launch
The Kaiko¯ura Plains Recovery Project to help the owners of rural quake-damaged land will officially launch on October 18.
Farmers from Kaiko¯ura Plains and Inland Rd area met at Donegal House earlier this month to set up a governance group.
The project has been allocated $600,000 over three years from the Ministry of Primary Industries Earthquake Recovery Fund..
Relieving Environment Can- terbury land management advisor Jodie Hoggard said they were still looking for two community representatives to join the governance team.
‘‘The Kaiko¯ura Plains Recovery Project is to help farmers get their farms back to the same, if not better, state than they were before the earthquake,’’ she said.
Changes in ground water are one of the biggest issues facing the farming community
‘‘After the rain last week the amount of water lying around highlighted the land changes.
‘‘It just shows with high intensity rainfalls like that the water has nowhere to go.
‘‘We have a higher water table than we did pre-quake so the water is struggling to go anywhere, because the lay of the land has changed,’’ Hoggard said.
Kaiko¯ura Plains Recovery Project launch at 7pm, Wednesday October 18, Donegal House. Contact Jodie Hoggard on (027) 551 5902 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
