Kick the Dust set to rock the stage
The sounds of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Bob Marley will fill the Memorial Hall tonight as student band Kick the Dust rocks Kaiko¯ura.
Blaze Waves will also play, with principal John Tait, stepping in as drummer. Tait also plays guitar and harmonica, and says he really enjoys playing with the students.
He has joined the student band before, for Fyffe House’s fundraiser Music on the Lawn concert.
Kick the Dust band member Orion Kahu, 15, said the concert was part of their end of term assessment, and the band had been practising all term. Kahu had been involved in high school production and stage challenges before, but this was the first time she had helped managed one.
She will work behind the scenes alongside three other production managers, Lataleah Norton, 15, and Holly Daikee, 14, and Mahanga Gillies, 14.
The team had been busy fundraising outside New World supermarket with a sausage sizzle, and guitarist and vocalist Marc Parkinson, 15, and drummer Reuben Lyons, 13, had raised also money by busking. This had been topped up with a Creative Communities grant.
The hardest thing has been the financial side, with catering and hall hire forming a large part of the costs, Kahu said.
Lead vocalist Parkinson will do a couple of solo performances, and sing some old favourites from Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley.
He said the band would play a huge mix of styles.
Other band members include Henry Bartrum, 15, on percussion, and bass player Hayden Rush, 14.
Drama teacher Madi Burnett said it had been the students’ responsibility to organise the whole concert from selecting caterers and booking the venue right through to promoting it.
They had learnt some business and entrepreneurship skills, she said.
‘‘The students chose what they wanted to do, and the ones that didn’t feel comfortable performing chose to take a management role.
‘‘On the night they will see a reflection of their work and how well they have done,’’ Burnett said.
Tickets are $10 from Kaiko¯ura High School or on the door. The concert kicks off at 7.30pm.
