Kaiko¯ura boxer takes to the ring again
A Kaiko¯ura boxer is following up on a recent bout in Blenheim by returning to the ring this weekend.
Thomas Harnett-Poharama fought in the Fight for Life Education Marlborough amateur charity boxing fundraiser in Blenheim at the end of September.
He will return to the ring, along with Chris Young, when they compete in the South Island Novice Champs at the Woolston Working Men’s Club in Christchurch on Saturday and Sunday. They will fight again on November 18 in Rolleston.
The elite male division boxers train at the Kaiko¯ura Boxing Club which is run by Ben Ford and Leo and Peter Harnett. They hold training sessions in the green garage at Sacred Heart’s Catholic Church.
In the Blenheim bout HarnettPoharama faced Peter Neilson, a 28-year-old construction worker.
‘‘Although Thomas boxed well he lost thanks to a split decision much to the amazement of the crowd,’’
Harnett said it was support from Bob Rochford of Kaiko¯ura Auto Motors, helping fund the travelling costs, that enabled them to fight.
