Kaiko¯ura boxer takes to the ring again


A Kaiko¯ura boxer is fol­low­ing up on a re­cent bout in Blen­heim by re­turn­ing to the ring this week­end.

Thomas Har­nett-Po­harama fought in the Fight for Life Ed­u­ca­tion Marl­bor­ough am­a­teur char­ity box­ing fundraiser in Blen­heim at the end of Septem­ber.

He will re­turn to the ring, along with Chris Young, when they com­pete in the South Is­land Novice Champs at the Wool­ston Work­ing Men’s Club in Christchurch on Satur­day and Sun­day. They will fight again on Novem­ber 18 in Rolle­ston.

The elite male di­vi­sion box­ers train at the Kaiko¯ura Box­ing Club which is run by Ben Ford and Leo and Pe­ter Har­nett. They hold train­ing ses­sions in the green garage at Sa­cred Heart’s Catholic Church.

In the Blen­heim bout Har­net­tPo­harama faced Pe­ter Neil­son, a 28-year-old con­struc­tion worker.

‘‘Although Thomas boxed well he lost thanks to a split de­ci­sion much to the amaze­ment of the crowd,’’

Har­nett said it was sup­port from Bob Rochford of Kaiko¯ura Auto Mo­tors, help­ing fund the trav­el­ling costs, that en­abled them to fight.

Kaiko¯ura elite male di­vi­sion box­ers Thomas Har­nett-Po­harama and Chris Young will box in the South Is­land Novice Champs this week­end.
