It was the town’s worst-kept secret. NCTIR had always aimed for a mid-December opening of the road north to Picton. We’ve waited so long to reconnect to the north and now it’s only five weeks away.
We still have a bit of uncertainty with the roads to get through yet. There will be unsealed surfaces, lane closures and the road will be closed overnight. State Highway 1 south has a few more weekly closures scheduled and planned closures can be expected on SH1 north.
It’s time to acknowledge just how hard people have worked on New Zealand’s biggest road and rail project and how difficult it has been for Kaiko¯ura in the last year.
Already some contractors are starting to hang up their boots and move on to their next job. They worked long hours through freezing cold days and nights, and dealt with frustrations including two cyclonic deluges.
Often we’ve just caught glimpses of your fluoro jackets when you’ve ducked into town, but we knew you were there.
On behalf of Kaiko¯ura - thank you - we will always be grateful for what you have done.
