HEHA team get into their stride
Dust off your walking shoes and start training for a free fun, family event next month that takes in some of Porirua’s stunning walkways.
Pound the Pavement, on this Saturday, offers a 5km and 10km walk around Aotea Lagoon, plus an 11km mixed terrain walk or run around the city and through Bothamley Park.
It has been organised by Porirua City Council and Healthy Eating, Healthy Action (HEHA).
‘‘Porirua has some wonderful walkways, and this event is a great opportunity to promote them, as well as encourage people to get out walking,’’ says HEHA coordinator Jessica Saolele.
The event attracted 300 people last year and Ms Saolele is confident of seeing more this year.
‘‘The focus is on taking part and finishing. It’s not an elite event. We also want to encourage people to get active.
‘‘A lot can’t afford to go to the gym and walking is a great free exercise.’’
The motto of the event is positive achievement comes from taking one step at a time. For training tips go to thewalkingsite.com/beginner
You can register for Pound the Pavement from 8am on the day at Aotea Lagoon with the event starting at 9am. Or pick-up a registration form from September 20 at Te Rauparaha Arena, Ora Toa Health Unit and Tumai Mo Te Iwi PHO.
There will be a number of health promotion and food stalls at Aotea Lagoon, plus music to add to the festival atmosphere of the day.
For more information call Porirua City Council, 237 5089.
