A walk in the park

Kapi-Mana News - - NEWS - By ESTHER LAUAKI

Passers-by could not help but take a second glance when they saw a particularly woolly walking group in Battle Hill Farm and Forest Park on Sunday.

About 15 alpaca were taken for a stroll by their breeders as part of a new alpaca and llama walking programme in the area.

‘‘We started the group to have some fun. Last year over Christmas we took our own alpaca out for a walk through the bush and thought it would be more fun if there were a group of us,’’ says organiser Stephen Mulholland.

The group meets every six to eight weeks to trek their pets through local bushes or have a day at the beach.

‘‘Alpaca love the ocean. They just jump straight through the waves and play around,’’ he says.

Years of experience with the animals makes him the ‘‘go-to guy’’ for people seeking alpaca advice.

‘‘I have about 60 at home so I guess you could call us the big players in town. We’ve [he and wife Tamara] bred them for a while and sold them but, through the group, we get to see a lot of the alpaca we bred ourselves so it’s like a family reunion every few weeks.’’

Pauatahanui breeder Angela Weston took two of her Suri alpaca, Olivia and Montezuma, on the outing to harness train them for the upcoming Hawke’s Bay A&P Show.

‘‘They were really good. They have really great personalities and they love people so I enjoy having them,’’ she says.
