Canopy costs

Kapi-Mana News - - OPINION -

Editor,

With regard to the mayoral candidate forum article [ KMN, September 28]. I thought it prudent to provide some clarity on the $250,000 paid [by council] to the Porirua Chamber of Commerce and Canopy Connection.

$150,000 of this is a selfimposed targeted rate on commercial property only. This is collected under the Rating Act to run a Mainstreet programme (Canopy Connection) and it does not come from the general rate.

This fund is used as a self help programme to promote the area and Porirua as a destination. Council and ratepayers should celebrate the fact that business is paying its own share to run promotions, events, attract business, shoppers, and investors to the city and the benefits that this brings to the city.
