Life is a Cabaret for Paremata’s Rosie

Paremata songbird Greer Samuel has played the good girl all her life but is swapping her jeans and sneakers for stilettos and fishnets for a risky role in Cabaret.

She plays Kit Kat Klub girl Rosie in the Wellington Music Academy’s stage production of the 1972 film, immortalised by Liza Minnelli, running at The Garden Club in Wellington.

Ms Samuel was the far more coy Gabriella in the New Zealand version of High School Musical in 2006, her first shot at musical theatre.

‘‘ High School Musical was four years ago now. It seems like it was such a long time ago. I really wanted to do Cabaret because I’m 19 now and [the role] is a lot more grown up; but also having Cabaret on my repertoire of musical theatre and being able to say I was in a major stage production like this is great.’’

She also recently scored the role of Sammy in the Emmy Award-winning online series Reservoir Hill, which is filmed in Aotea.

‘‘[ Reservoir Hill] is a bit harder because character-wise you have to take on your character week by week instead on knowing what her motive is down the line, but it’s cool. It keeps things fresh.’’

Bringing out her ‘‘ raunchy’’ side to play Rosie has taken some getting used to, she says.

‘‘ She’s pretty much a prostitute and our costumes are just these fishnets and these undie things. I have to explain to my boyfriend, ‘ Now, people are going to be touching me, but it’s only acting’.

‘‘I’m one of the youngest in the cast. They laugh at how comfortable I am getting into people’s space and just being out there, but you have to be mature and professional about it. When it comes down to it, it’s acting and there’s nothing personal about it. I feel really lucky to be working along- side such an experienced and amazing cast.’’

Ms Samuel is still deciding what her ultimate career path will be, but she says if she keeps working hard one day she’ll figure it out.

All the proceeds from Cabaret go to the Life Flight Trust.
