Intersection needs fixing
A concrete barrier so traffic cannot turn right out of Shell onto Mungavin Ave is a good move. The right turn into Awatea St should also be changed.
The road code clearly states that when turning right, keep the vehicle wheels straight ahead so that if you are hit from behind, you will go straight ahead and not be pushed into oncoming traffic. Have a look and you will notice that the turn lane is facing across the road. I spoke to the council about it years ago, but as usual, I was fobbed off.
Also, there is a give way for cars turning right into Mungavin Ave from Awatea St and the cars waiting to turn into Awatea St will not give way to cars coming out of Awatea street.
The Arawhata-Awatea intersection has a give way on both sides, but the problem is people coming up to it are travelling too fast and perhaps unable to stop, or selecting the wrong gap: they do not move off so that they can stop if they have to.
It’s a matter of driving to the conditions, knowing the road rules and driver responsibility. – CATHY TAINUI,
