The dispute between 117 striking workers at Cryovac Sealed Air Ltd in Porirua and their employer was settled last week. Workers in the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) agreed to an annualised pay increase of 3.19 per cent for each of the next two years.

The settlement, which followed three weeks of strike action at the Porirua plastic bag manufacturer, was ratified at a special meeting of EPMU members on November 22. Previously the employer was offering a 2 per cent pay rise over one year.

‘‘ This is a good outcome, highlighting the financial benefits of belonging to a union collective,’’ said EPMU organiser Mark James.

‘‘[This deal] is welcome at a time when prices are rising and the government has hiked GST.’’
