Expenses deadline passed

Kapi-Mana News - - NEWS - By KRIS DANDO

All but three Porirua candidates in the recent local body elections had filed their expenses by the end of last week.

Although six people – Piripi Gray, Maria Salu-Burgess, Viktoria Jakobs, Faafoi Seiuli, Tim Manu and Gregory Fortuin – missed the cutoff date of December 8 to file returns, the latter three have since fronted up with their figures.

Mr Fortuin, who moved house and said an email reminding him about filing returns was not received, spent $10,209 in his run at the mayoralty. Tim Manu, meanwhile, who tried unsuccessfully to retain his eastern ward seat, spent $1192 and newcomer Faafoi Seiuli just $ 15, on photocopying.

Porirua electoral officer Warwick Lampp says the remaining three candidates will be contacted again and ‘‘poked with a big stick’’.

Piripi Gray, a beneficiary, told KapiMana News he did not spend anything towards his campaign, but Mr Lampp says that isn’t the point, as it is a requirement by law for candidates to declare expenses.

‘‘I know it could take a while to happen but I will be giving them a hard time. If we’re not making any progress, then the police will be involved.’’
