Prison visitors’ playroom wins volunteers’ acclaim
The child activity team at Arohata Prison has been named its volunteer group of the year.
The award was announced at a presentation at Rimutaka Prison earlier this month, where groups and individuals that work with the three area prisons were recognised for their contribution.
The child activity team run a children’s room during visiting time at Arohata. Children visiting prisoners can move from the visitation room to the children’s room freely and enjoy time with the prisoner and time at play.
‘‘Our volunteers are dedicated to improving the lives of the children visiting the prison,’’ said group co-ordinator Jo Keats.
Recognised: Arohata child activity team members with the prison’s custodial manager, Taunu Taepa. From left, Toni Finkle, Thelma Brown, Mr Taepa, Rosemary Biss, Jo Keats, Judith McMillan, Susan Tompkinson, Janet Heaver and Muriel Withell.
