Prison vis­i­tors’ play­room wins vol­un­teers’ ac­claim

The child ac­tiv­ity team at Aro­hata Prison has been named its vol­un­teer group of the year.

The award was an­nounced at a pre­sen­ta­tion at Rimu­taka Prison ear­lier this month, where groups and in­di­vid­u­als that work with the three area pris­ons were recog­nised for their con­tri­bu­tion.

The child ac­tiv­ity team run a chil­dren’s room dur­ing vis­it­ing time at Aro­hata. Chil­dren vis­it­ing pris­on­ers can move from the visi­ta­tion room to the chil­dren’s room freely and en­joy time with the pris­oner and time at play.

‘‘Our vol­un­teers are ded­i­cated to im­prov­ing the lives of the chil­dren vis­it­ing the prison,’’ said group co-or­di­na­tor Jo Keats.
