Pukerua Bay student Mel Lind has been awarded a $ 2000 Southern Hospitality Industry Award scholarship.

Ms Lind is about to embark on her first year of WelTec’s Diploma in Hospitality Management Supervision – a three-year programme covering a range of subjects from hospitality management to food preparation and beverage service, to restaurant supervision and HR practice.

‘‘I was so happy to get this scholarship which will help pay for my diploma.’’ Last year Mel studied WelTec’s Food and Beverage Service course.

Gregg Walker is WelTec’s Food and Beverage team coordinator and says Mel is a very deserving recipient of the scholarship.

‘‘ Mel has been a constant attendee all year, and then religiously from Friday to Sunday is a top barista at Ruby’s Cafe in Paremata.

‘‘She put her hand up to compete at the Wellington Food Show, Auckland Salon and both the Regional and National World skills competitions, competing in the field of restaurant service where she acquitted herself admirably and scored very well, gaining Silvers at Auckland and then at Christchurch.

‘‘She has a great work ethic and as far as aptitude, leadership, reliability, co-operation and personal presentation, she leaves an amazing trail of enthusiasm.’’

Gregg says Mel is an exceptional person who will offer much to the hospitality sector and will have a career that will open many doors for her. The scholarship is awarded annually by Southern Hospitality Limited, New Zealand’s largest hospitality and food service equipment supply company.

Going the extra smile: Hospitality student Mel Lind is getting some experience under her belt working as a barista at Ruby’s Cafe in Paremata.
