Streets to be closed
Wellington is set for a huge weekend, but folk heading into the Capital need to be aware of several road closures.
From Thursday through to Sunday, Wellington hosts the NZI Sevens, several Waitangi Day events and sends off the Velux 5 Oceans yacht race competitors.
Starting on Thursday, the annual NZI Sevens Parade leaves from Ballance St at 12.45pm and winds its way along Lambton Quay, Willis St and Mercer St before finishing at Civic Square. Motorists should only be affected for about an hour that afternoon, but it’s best to avoid driving in the area if possible during that time.
Courtenay Pl will be transformed into the Sevens Street Party on Saturday night.
Road closures will be more extensive than in previous years as Wellington City Council is trialling several safety and logistics-related measures before the Rugby World Cup.
There will be no entry for motorists to Courtenay Pl and some surrounding streets like Blair, Allen and Tory streets from 5pm till 6am.
From 9pm, the closure will go wider including parts of Taranaki, Dixon and Manners streets. Those closures will also be in place until 6am.
Both ends of Courtenay Pl will be blocked to pedestrians from 9pm till midnight. Access to Courtenay Pl will be via Tory St during this time.
The traffic closure includes buses and taxis.
To compensate for this, there will be extended bus stops on Wakefield and Ghuznee streets, and temporary taxi stands on Wakefield St between Blair, Allen and Tory streets and on Cambridge Terrace between Courtenay Pl and Alpha St.
