The group established to form stronger links between Kenepuru Hospital and the community is off to a slow start, with more male and Pacific representatives needed.

A consumer committee was created in September last year by Capital & Coast District Health Board, with an eye to giving the public a voice, meeting regularly to discuss issues raised within the community to improve the hospital’s services.

So far, four applicants have been appointed to the consumer committee, but six more representatives are being sought, says Capital & Coast’s operations manager Jen Boryer.

She says they had a number of expressions of interest but require a better spread of age and ethnicity. ‘‘We’re looking for people who have used the hospital’s services in the past two years, maybe people who have community networks and can bring the public’s voice into this.

Freda Tohill, Judy Whitcombe, Kamiria Mullen and Reverend Yvonne Fisk are on the board.

The first meeting of the consumer committee takes place at the hospital on March 28, followed by meetings every eight weeks.

They will not be open to the public or media.

There will eventually be similar committees in Kapiti and Wellington, reporting directly to the DHB.

Anyone interested should contact Barbara Kelly on 918 2311 or bar see, click on our community.
