Gap in bus service

Kapi-Mana News - - OPINION/NEWS -

In the revised Porirua area bus service, to take effect February 21, the Papakowhai 65 bus is to be replaced by a Route 236 service. I quote from ‘‘It will provide a service between 8.00am to 5.30pm weekdays.’’

This means there is no service for commuters going to Wellington during normal working and school hours. I do not think this change has been widely publicised. It is hidden away on the website and was not mentioned in the flyer that was distributed to homes.

When I boarded the 7.20am bus this week I counted 13 passengers. If that is not a wellpatronised service, I don’t now what is. Contrary to what Metlink tells us, these early buses are some of the best patronised of any on the route.

Not all of us are young and fit enough to walk to and from Paremata Station. Not all of us are willing or able to take a car in to Wellington every day.

Up until now the public transport system through Papakowhai has been something the suburb could consider a positive feature. These changes will almost take us back to the days I remember when there was no bus service at all.
