In­ner city plans

Dur­ing the past year you have pub­lished ar­ti­cles or let­ters about the plans of the Porirua City Coun­cil to spend $14 mil­lion over eight years to re­vi­talise the city’s busi­ness cen­tre.

It is no sur­prise that the plans have been en­thu­si­as­ti­cally sup­ported by busi­ness in­ter­ests such as the Porirua Cham­ber of Com­merce and Canopy Con­nec­tion. These groups wel­come the al­lo­ca­tion of pub­lic money to subsidise projects in the pri­vate sec­tor.

Some ratepay­ers are op­pos­ing the scheme be­cause they see it ben­e­fit­ing a small group of de­vel­op­ers, re­tail­ers and com­mer­cial real es­tate agents. In ad­di­tion, their view is that there
