Tawa College top football
Tawa College’s First XI boys’ football side have finished at the top of their table to qualify for the premier youth championship round, and they have one eye on nationals.
Wins over Kapiti and Rongotai colleges led into a convincing 3-0 hammering of St Pat’s Silverstream, the first time Silverstream has been beaten in a home game since 2008.
Tawa’s solid defence and powerful attack was too much for their hosts.
With only three remaining First XI players from last year, the new team is bonding well under captain Luke Nicholls and new coach Phil Crawshaw.
Going into the next round, the team have some challenging games and feel confident about qualifying for the Lotto Premier Tournament in Napier later this year.
They were able to show off to past players and staff during the college’s 50th birthday celebrations over Queen’s Birthday, beating a Tawa Old Boys side 9-2.
Tawa College is a feeder to Tawa and Western Suburbs and the quality of the players coming out of the college is looking good for both clubs, Crawshaw says.
