Healthy hearts for Glenview kids
Glenview School in Porirua East is the first school in New Zealand to secure two Healthy Heart Awards.
The Heart Foundationsponsored awards are given out to schools that show a desire to foster healthy activity and eating.
Glenview do not allow junk food on the school grounds; all lunches are healthy; and their students ensure the messages are taken home as well.
Principal Gaylene Hill said she was ‘‘extremely proud’’ of their achievement.
‘‘We got this [policy within the school] under way many years ago and we’ve just continued to create a healthy environment, promoting health and exercise with our children and staff. We can always improve and our next step is to make our community even more aware – our student council are designing a pamphlet that they will take home.’’
Glenview School, with a roll of 85, is part of the Fruit In Schools programme, ensuring pupils get one free piece of fruit per day.
