Healthy hearts for Glen­view kids

Glen­view School in Porirua East is the first school in New Zealand to se­cure two Healthy Heart Awards.

The Heart Foun­da­tion­spon­sored awards are given out to schools that show a de­sire to fos­ter healthy ac­tiv­ity and eat­ing.

Glen­view do not al­low junk food on the school grounds; all lunches are healthy; and their stu­dents en­sure the mes­sages are taken home as well.

Prin­ci­pal Gaylene Hill said she was ‘‘ex­tremely proud’’ of their achieve­ment.

‘‘We got this [pol­icy within the school] un­der way many years ago and we’ve just con­tin­ued to cre­ate a healthy en­vi­ron­ment, pro­mot­ing health and ex­er­cise with our chil­dren and staff. We can al­ways im­prove and our next step is to make our com­mu­nity even more aware – our stu­dent coun­cil are designing a pam­phlet that they will take home.’’

Glen­view School, with a roll of 85, is part of the Fruit In Schools pro­gramme, en­sur­ing pupils get one free piece of fruit per day.
