Keeping community pantry stocked

National MPs Hekia Parata and Aaron Gilmore donated 14 spades to the Wesley Community Action garden project recently, helping an endeavour which aims to supplement the organisation’s food bank.

Some of the spades were given to Mr Gilmore, who is based in Christchurch, by the Student Army that was mobilised following the February 22 earthquake.

On hearing that Wesley Community Action needed gardening tools, Mr Gilmore contacted Ms Parata.

‘‘I’m delighted to be helping. It’s a wonderful cause,’’ he said. WCA has established the ‘‘community pantry’’, which works with families who use their food bank. They create and maintain a garden and small orchard which will add to the food bank’s supplies.

‘‘Not only does it encourage those who use the food bank to get involved, it teaches participants about how to grow fruit and vegetables, and about healthy eating,’’ Ms Parata said.

Anyone wishing to donate gardening tools, building materials, seeds and seedlings can drop them off at the Cannons Creek Community Pantry, 206 Mungavin Ave, Cannons Creek.
