Northern hit hard in the rain

Kapi-Mana News - - SPORT -

Northern United’s long unbeaten run was brought to a halt in the rain at Porirua Park on Saturday, with Hutt Old Boys-Marist the winners following a torrid contest.

The result leaves Norths, for once, mid-table, but it is still early days in the Jubilee Cup.

Oriental-Rongotai and Poneke are the only sides unbeaten in the first two rounds.

HOBM had all the territory in the first half but only led 13-7 at the break.

Although Norths conceded following a botched clearance, they scored a try as only they can. Api Naikatini broke the line 30m out and Nene Va’alepu did the rest.

The agile second-five would score again very late, but unfortunately HOBM hung on for the 20-19 victory.

Tawa, meanwhile, lost 21-7 at Lyndhurst Park to fellow Swindale Shield side Old Boys-University.

They face Poneke B this Saturday, with Norths taking on Upper Hutt in the Jubilee Cup.
