Whitby outlaws liquor in parks
A liquor ban has come into effect in Whitby, covering the Endeavour Park, Adventure Park and Whitby Lakes areas.
The ban became law immediately after Porirua City councillors ratified it at the strategy, finance and regulatory committee on June 16.
Alcohol was identified as a key factor in a perceived increase in youth crime in the suburb over summer, with police meeting community members in January to voice their concerns.
Whitby Scout Hall, Samuel Marsden Collegiate and the shopping centre were enduring
increased vandalism frequency.
The map of the new liquor ban area shows the shopping centre is not included.
At the committee meeting, councillor Denys Latham wanted to know how the ban would be signposted. He was told there would be ‘‘appropriate signage’’ put up on the periphery of the banned areas, as well as inside the zones.
Whitby-based councillor Anita Baker said coloured markings on the footpath, as other councils have, would alert young people more effectively, as ‘‘they do not look up’’.
