Whitby out­laws liquor in parks

A liquor ban has come into ef­fect in Whitby, cov­er­ing the En­deav­our Park, Ad­ven­ture Park and Whitby Lakes ar­eas.

The ban be­came law im­me­di­ately af­ter Porirua City coun­cil­lors rat­i­fied it at the strat­egy, fi­nance and reg­u­la­tory com­mit­tee on June 16.

Al­co­hol was iden­ti­fied as a key fac­tor in a per­ceived in­crease in youth crime in the sub­urb over sum­mer, with po­lice meet­ing com­mu­nity mem­bers in Jan­uary to voice their con­cerns.

in­creased van­dal­ism fre­quency.

The map of the new liquor ban area shows the shop­ping cen­tre is not in­cluded.

At the com­mit­tee meet­ing, coun­cil­lor Denys Latham wanted to know how the ban would be sign­posted. He was told there would be ‘‘ap­pro­pri­ate sig­nage’’ put up on the pe­riph­ery of the banned ar­eas, as well as in­side the zones.

Whitby-based coun­cil­lor Anita Baker said coloured mark­ings on the foot­path, as other coun­cils have, would alert young peo­ple more ef­fec­tively, as ‘‘they do not look up’’.
