Holiday winner rapt
Receiving a $5000 Gold Coast holiday for $60 is enough to brighten anyone’s June.
Elsdon woman Irene Tawera, 59, is jetting off to Australia this week after winning a holiday by ‘‘shopping under the canopies’’.
She had spent $60 at canopies’ video shops, bakeries and $2 shops, collecting stamps on a loyalty card, which was later drawn as the winner of the holiday.
Not expecting to win, Mrs Tawera forgot she entered the draw until she received a phone call from competition organisers, business association Canopy Connection.
‘‘I couldn’t believe it. I thought ‘Oh, you never win anything’.’’
Mrs Tawera is taking her family with her for the sevenday holiday – mother Tinka Wineera, sons Abryss and Tamaia Dwyer, Tamaia’s partner Amanda Windley and son Lukah. Winter is the perfect time to escape to a warmer climate, Mrs Tawera says.
Although she has plenty of family in the Gold Coast, Mrs Tawera says she will not be moving across the ditch – she realised while living in Liverpool that Porirua was the place for her.
‘‘I really like it here. I like Porirua.’’
Here, everything is within walking distance and people are friendly, she says.
Given she won the holiday by shopping, it’s not surprising hitting the Gold Coast malls will be a top priority.
