Great parents grow great kids

Mana Parents Centre is on the lookout for a few good men and women.

The centre is run by volunteers, and will soon have gaps as parents move on to other opportunities.

Centre manager Joan Hay says this is a great opportunity to get involved with a hugely beneficial organisation and to take on fun and rewarding roles.

‘‘At parents’ centres we believe that great parents grow great children, and a part of this is obviously focusing on the great parents that are out there and the opportunities that Parents Centre can provide for them.

Mana has been a very strong centre, supporting parents in Porirua for over 50 years and run an enormous number of services for local parents.’’

Running the centre requires a wide range of talents, and there are opportunities for volunteers to gain experience and skills in event management, marketing, sponsorship, newsletter editing, writing, accounting, administration, project management, and more, she says.

Liz Hibberd, who runs childbirth education classes for the Centre, says the work and professionalism of the Centre’s volunteers is impressive.

‘‘The roles are so widely varying and we have had some really innovative people who have used the Centre as a stepping stone from parenthood back into the paid workforce.

‘‘This has seen our centre go from strength to strength and offer an increasing variety of classes, including positive discipline and tantrums, baby sign and fitness classes for new mums. The drivers have been our committee members who want to provide the best advice and support they can to parents in the community.’’

Ms Hay says many people will be familiar with the work the Centre does in the community, but may not realise how much of that is because of volunteers.

‘‘Our committee members really manage the most incredible roles at the same time as being parents.’’

‘‘And the committee has a lot of fun while they are at it,’’ she says.

Mana Parents Centre is holding a public meeting to plan the Centre’s ongoing management and to welcome new people to their team– July 19, 7.30 pm, at 13 Marina View, Bridgepoint Complex, Mana. Contact Joan Hay j.hay@parentscen or 233 2022 x 803.
