Beware of metal thieves

The coppers are worried about your copper.

Scrap metal prices are at an all-time high, and theft of metal has correspondingly spiked in Porirua.

Burglars seek out copper and any ferrous metal like iron and steel in particular, Detective Sergeant Steve Dunn says.

Burglars will take any metal they can get hold of, from household furniture to water boilers to piping, he says.

‘‘We just urge the public to be on the lookout,’’ he says.

The rise of metal prices may be linked to next year’s London Olympics, Mr Dunn says. Before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China’s insatiable demand for metal led to a similar spike in metal thefts.
