Canine rugby fans on sideline

On muddy or inclement days, local rugby crowds might see Paul Zimmerman at a Northern Utd match accompanied by two unusual fans – his boxer dogs Zena and Chloe.

Kapi-Mana News spotted Mr Zimmerman at Porirua Park on July 2, watching Norths beat Petone in a Jubilee Cup match.

Mr Zimmerman has been playing local rugby for 21 years, and is a former Norths rep.

The day we met him he should have been playing for Pressie Whites in their annual faceoff against friendly rivals Pressie Reds, but muddy grounds cancelled the game.

The annual match is dubbed the ‘‘ Battle of the Bridge’’, Mr Zimmerman said, as the Reds are traditionally drawn from Titahi Bay and the Whites from Porirua.

The victors reserve naming rights on Mungavin Bridge for the year.

This year’s game is yet to be rescheduled.
