WORTH A MENTION

What we’re loving on the box, the web and wherever. DVD: Machete, dir. Robert Rodriguez, 2010. Oodles of style and glorious action. This is a noholds-barred tale of a good man against the dirty double-crossing world. Starring Danny Trejo, it’s all-attitude, with a palette of over-the-top characters (Lindsay Lohan, Steven Seagal, Danny DeVito, Cheech Marin, Michelle Rodriguez). Robert Rodriguez’s best yet. ALBUM: Roberta Flack – Killing Me Softly. A voice that makes you feel warm inside and break out the dance moves in the kitchen. Flack’s smooth, soulful love songs range from achingly sad, to sassy and fun. Includes my ultimate shower singing song Killing Me Softly, and all-time favourite sad song, Jessie. WEBSITE: Chowhound. This is an American foodie site on which no small detail of culinaria is too miniscule to avoid discussion. The site features recipes, videos and discussion board topics ranging from favourite strange flavour combinations to the so-called proper way to cook a range of dishes. Unfortunately for those of us who aren’t well-travelled we miss out on one of the site’s main features – ongoing threads about menus and culinary specialties overseas. TAKEAWAY: Porirua Bakery and Cafe’s bacon and mushroom sandwiches are the business. Juicy buttery mushrooms paired with salty bacon gently enfolded in soft white bread. For only $3.
