STV vot­ing for re­gional coun­cil

De­spite ob­jec­tions from Up­per Hutt and Wairarapa re­gional coun­cil­lors Welling­ton Re­gional Coun­cil has opted to switch to sin­gle­trans­fer­able-vote – STV – elec­tions.

Up­per Hutt rep­re­sen­ta­tive Paul Swain wanted the re­gional coun­cil to con­tinue with first-past­the-post elec­tions in or­der to be con­sis­tent with Up­per Hutt City Coun­cil. Vot­ing pa­pers which asked vot­ers to tick some boxes and num­bers in oth­ers caused con­fu­sion, he said.

‘‘In or­der to be con­sis­tent with the [Up­per Hutt City] coun­cil, I am go­ing to be vot­ing against.’’
