New chairman gets salary lift

Grow Wellington’s new chairman is to get a handsome salary increase after less than a month in the job.

Paul Mersi took over from Murray McCaw at the end of June. Mr McCaw was paid $20,000 a year, and board members were paid $15,000.

A report by Wellington Regional Council policy adviser Kate O’Regan noted that Mr Mersi would need to spend time coming up to speed with the Wellington Regional Strategy and Grow Wellington’s programme to implement it.

A recent review of the strategy identified the need for an improved relationship between the Wellington Regional Strategy committee and the Grow Wellington Board.

‘‘The $5000 additional remuneration does not appear to be adequate,’’ Ms O’Regan wrote.

She recommended paying Mr Mersi $30,000 a year and the council approved unanimously.
