Polyfest performers treated a packed audience to a colourful, musical assault on the senses last Thursday night.

Five colleges from Porirua, Tawa and Newlands took part in the celebration of Pacific Island and Maori culture at Te Rauparaha Arena. A buzzing capacity crowd howled with delight at each new song and dance performance.

Porirua College hosted the event, and entered eight separate cultural troupes, from kapa haka to groups from Tuvalu, Tokelau and Niue.

Also performing were troupes from Aotea College, Mana College, Tawa College and Newlands College.

Mayor Nick Leggett opened the festival by congratulating audience members on their cultural pride.

‘‘It’s time for us to get together and celebrate who we are,’’ he said.
