Bowling to win
Aotea College student Jacob Rameka has been making a name for himself at indoor bowls.
He recently won the Wellington title and now had his sights set on the nationals at the North Wellington Indoor Bowls Club’s Onepoto clubrooms this Saturday.
He has been playing the sport for two years, saying he enjoys the subtlety and strategy – although Rameka brings his own personality to bear sometimes.
‘‘If I hit a good shot, I like screaming and I jump up and down. I yell every time I make a good shot.’’
After cleaning up in the Wellington championships – he won each of his matches easily – adding a national title would see another for the trophy cabinet of his school. He says it is a sport that many young people are playing now, with memberships at the Porirua Club soaring.
Rameka is a dab hand at several other sports, like rugby league, tennis and hockey.
Darts future: Cassius Akavi may not have hit a 180 yet but the 10-year-old is already impressing with his positive attitude towards the sport.
Bowls whiz: Jacob Rameka has taken huge strides in a short time playing indoor bowls.
