The future of Porirua East’s community bus service hangs in the balance after a free trial of the service in July. The on-call bus, which delivers Waitangirua, Cannons Creek and Ranui residents to the train station, the city centre and Kenepuru Hospital, will be canned after October 15 unless an average four passengers use it per trip. Before the free trial, an average of two passengers used the bus per trip. Two passengers used the service per trip in the first week of the free trial, rising to five passengers per trip in the second week. The service is always free for SuperGold card holders, and costs between $3 and $4.50 for other passengers. Ranui residents will suffer most from a potential service cancellation – the 220 bus through Porirua East misses Ranui on its route.
