Row­ing club opens up for new sea­son

With sum­mer ap­proach­ing the Porirua Row­ing Club is gear­ing up for an­other sea­son.

For those who want to find out what row­ing is all about, the club is of­fer­ing a free learn-to-row course, con­ducted over four weeks on Satur­day and Sunday morn­ings.

Club spokesper­son Matthew Hall says the course will pro­vide ba­sic in­struc­tion on com­pet­i­tive row­ing tech­nique and ba­sic boat han­dling skills. It is de­signed for all ages and will be­gin Septem­ber 10.

Par­tic­i­pants will be taught to row by – as well as train with – Porirua Row­ing Club’s cham­pi­onship-winning crews and coaches.

Those keen to con­tinue will be in­vited to join the club’s train­ing regime that in­volves ad­vanced row­ing tech­nique and land-based fit­ness. This train­ing regime is an ex­cel­lent way to get fit or main­tain fit­ness, says Hall.

Once mem­bers develop skill they will be­gin com­pet­ing and crews good enough will also travel away to cham­pi­onship re­gat­tas through­out the coun­try. For those who want to find out more, the club is hold­ing open days this week­end, be­tween 8am and 9am, also Tues­day nights from 5.30pm till 6.30pm. The club’s boat sheds are on the har­bour fore­shore in Onepoto Road, Ti­tahi Bay.
