Locals win arena’s first game
A local sports team was the first to win a final at Wellington’s newest sports arena – and they did it before the venue was officially open.
The Kapi Mana year 7 representative netball team played off against five other Wellington netball clubs over a series of weeks, and on Sunday, August 21, they won the season title at the new ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie.
‘‘It has been a long regional tournament . . . and the final two teams [were] given the opportunity to play their finals in the very new Wellington sports arena as curtain raisers for the finals of the Super League netball grades,’’ said parent and team supporter Luana Vailalo.
Both the year 7 and year 8 Kapi Mana teams were unbeaten throughout the tournament coming into the finals, and the year 7 team has done well to battle through to a win, she said. ‘‘It’s really good, we’re really happy. ‘‘I think the win was well deserved.’’ The new courts at the arena were ‘‘ the bomb’’, she said.
‘‘It was really exciting. There’s just so much space, it’s humungous and all the facilities were just so flash. When the girls walked in they were so excited,’’ Ms Vailalo said. ‘‘I guess it just made them want to play all the harder.’’
The year 7 team also received the Fair Play trophy, an award voted on by the other teams.
The 12-court $47.5 million ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie was officially opened on Saturday, August 27.
