Pedal hire from Plimmerton
The owner of a new bicycle hire business based at Plimmerton Railway Station has high hopes locals and visitors alike will use two wheels to see some of the area’s most stunning scenery.
Claire Anderson and her family moved to New Zealand from Britain four years ago. Seeking a lifestyle change, they found what they were looking for in Plimmerton.
‘‘It’s a beautiful place, we love it here.’’
Ms Anderson, a keen cyclist with her husband and two daughters, spotted a gap in the market when it came to using the cycleways around Plimmerton, particularly Ara Harakeke pathway. She says more people are likely to plan cycling day trips in Porirua if they can drive or take the train to Plimmerton, then hire bikes.
‘‘It’s another piece in the puzzle of the options you have when you visit from Wellington or elsewhere. There’s great parking and public transport.’’
It’s taken about six months from the germ of an idea to become reality, with Plimmerton Cycle Hire officially open for business from this Saturday. The bikes will be hired from inside the station building.
Ms Anderson is starting small, with four adult mountainbikes available at hourly, half-day, full day and overnight rates. Brochures – which outline cycle routes like Plimmerton to Pukerua Bay, around Pauatahanui Inlet, up Airlie Rd, or even just along the suburb’s promenade – can be picked up at Moana Lodge and from Mack’s Tracks.
‘‘There’s something for everyone, from a short, flat seven-kilometre ride to Paremata on a purpose-built track, to a 40km mixture of on-and off-road riding to the summit of Puketiro Hill,’’ Ms Anderson says. ‘‘If the demand goes up – and we’re hoping it’s busy when the nicer weather comes – we might look to have more bikes available.’’
The business is in partnership with New Zealand Green Bike Trust.
Mack’s Tracks owner Gerald Shelton says, ‘‘We are often asked for cycle hire by backpackers . . . it’s great that we can now provide this service for visitors to Plimmerton.’’
