Celebrating the ‘Porirua way’
A mayoral showcase of Porirua is being held at Te Rauparaha Arena this Saturday when locals will get a chance to sample some of the city’s hidden talents.
‘‘This is a first for Porirua City,’’ says mayor Nick Leggett.
‘‘It gives residents, particularly those who have recently moved here, a chance to see all the really interesting and exciting things our city has to offer in one room. It’s a celebration of our community, of business and of the Porirua way.’’
Mr Leggett says it is also a great opportunity to invite friends and family from other parts of the region to get a taste of Porirua.
‘‘ Many people haven’t been to Te Rauparaha Arena or next door to Pataka.
‘‘This event gives them the excuse to come down and check us out.’’
More than 100 businesses, clubs, groups, services and attractions will be on show, with giveaways up for grabs.
The event is being co-hosted by the council and the Porirua Chamber of Commerce, and is open to the public between 2pm and 4.30pm.
Commerce executive director Holly Thompson says the city has 3500 businesses, many of which will be at the expo.
‘‘Our business community can be hard to see, with many working from home, or in the various villages and business clusters. This event puts them all in one room, and helps people to support local businesses by knowing who’s proudly part of our city,’’ she said.
‘‘The event is a great example of where the Chamber and council can work together to create new opportunities for our businesses and residents..’’
