Rebel boxers show their winning style

Two Rebel Boxing fighters have come away with titles after the recent regional champs, and they are thirsty for more titles.

Lachie Edge and Jovian Wichman, boxing in the 51kg and 60kg classes respectively, both overcame their opponents in tight contests at the WellingtonHutt Valley Amateur Boxing Champs last month.

Edge, 15, from Pauatahanui, says the first and second rounds of his bout were drawn, but he got some vital punches in during the final round.

‘‘It was close, when the referee was holding both our arms, I was really worried. But it turned out good, so I was quite relieved.’’

He has been training at the Rebel Boxing gym in the old Porirua Hospital grounds for just over two years. He and a group of rugby-playing friends decided to give it a go, ‘‘and they dropped off but I stayed’’.

Edge says the atmosphere at Rebel is serious but welcoming and he has made good friends since joining up. More than 50 men and women are members at Rebel.

Next up for him and Jovian is the Manawatu Champs this weekend.

Boxers train on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at Rebel Boxing, all welcome.

Rising talent: Young Rebel Boxing fighter Lachie Edge has been boxing just two years, but now has a regional title to his name.
