Cargo comes on board as prin­ci­pal

Bishop Viard Col­lege’s board of trustees has ap­pointed Teresa Cargo to be the school’s new prin­ci­pal.

Ms Cargo, the deputy prin­ci­pal at Sa­cred Heart Girls’ Col­lege in Hamil­ton, where she has taught for 30 years, will take on the role in the sec­ond week of term four, fol­low­ing the de­par­ture of Hedley Aiken, who is re­tir­ing af­ter 15 years in the job.

Board of trustees chair­woman Mar­ian Black­ford says the ap­point­ment process at­tracted ap­pli­cants of the high­est qual­ity, with many demon­strat­ing lead­er­ship ex­pe­ri­ence at the high­est lev­els in Catholic ed­u­ca­tion.

‘‘Af­ter a thor­ough ap­point­ment process, it is clear that Teresa’s skills and ex­pe­ri­ence meet the cur­rent needs of our com­mu­nity.’’

A grad­u­ate of the Otago School of Phys­i­cal Ed­u­ca­tion and the Auck­land Col­lege of Ed­u­ca­tion, Ms Cargo is study­ing to­wards a masters de­gree in ed­u­ca­tional lead­er­ship. She has taught re­li­gious ed­u­ca­tion, sci­ence, phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion and health.

Mrs Black­ford says Ms Cargo has a wide range of lead­er­ship ex­pe­ri­ence in a Catholic col­lege and a strong back­ground in pas­toral care.

‘‘ Teresa has sev­eral years’ ex­pe­ri­ence as a deputy prin­ci­pal and has had ex­tended pe­ri­ods of time as a suc­cess­ful act­ing prin­ci­pal,’’ she said.

‘‘Through her lead­er­ship, [Teresa] will make a sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tion to our col­lege and stu­dents’ lives.’’
