Crowds flock to see vehicles

Petrolheads at the Plaza attracted 4000 people to see more than 100 vehicles of every shape and size on August 28.

An annual event at North City Plaza, this year’s people’s choice award went to Rob Meynell’s immaculately turned-out Falcon XY GT 351. Host Western Bay Street Rodders president Eric van Diggele said the Falcon was the star of the show, even though Meynell faced tough competition from a number of different vehicles.

‘‘At this year’s show we changed things around a bit, had the motorcycles up the middle, rather than in a separate area, and it worked really well.

‘‘Our focus is to display as many different types of vehicles to complement the usual hotrods and street machines.’’

Other machines included imports, competition vehicles and even a jet sprint boat. Some entrants came from as far away as Palmerston North to attend.

Van Diggele says the club is already thinking about next year’s event, and hopes to make it grow.

Dozens of local and regional sponsors helped the day go smoothly, including Repco, Pro Parts, Mothers, Mag and Turbo Tyre and Service Centre, Juniors Kustom Rides and Classics, Hutt Boyz Choppers, and Road and Track Lower Hutt.
