Chris Kirk-burn­nand says that the ‘‘blame’’ for the change of heart by Whi­tireia Polytech­nic to­wards the white elephant per­form­ing arts cen­tre rests with the peo­ple on the new joint gov­ern­ing coun­cil of Whi­tireia and Wel­tec poly­tech­nics.

Sorry Chris, wrong words: for the long suf­fer­ing ratepay­ers of this city it re­ally isn’t that we should blame them for this decision; we should be grate­ful in­stead that sense has pre­vailed.

It is bad enough that the Porirua Foun­da­tion has his­tor­i­cally re­ceived an an­nual $500,000 of gam­bling prof­its from the Mana Com­mu­nity Grants Foun­da­tion which it has then al­lo­cated to Porirua City Coun­cil to off­set ex­ces­sive ex­penses at the Te Rau­paraha Arena (money which could in­stead have gone to ‘‘real’’ com­mu­nity groups, rather than arena wages), but see­ing that the pay­ment to PCC was the only grant in 2009 and more than the MCGF grant in 2010 just makes me won­der why the com­mu­nity should be sat­is­fied with the fact that the MCGF trus­tees are all cur­rently on
