Drivers already on the right track
Give way rules are changing this Sunday, but many motorists in Porirua follow the new rules already, road authorities say.
From March 25, cars turning right must give way to cars turning left into the same road, and cars on terminating roads at a T-intersection must give way to cars turning off the continuing road that forms the top of the T.
The rule changes will bring New Zealand’s road code in line with other countries’ rules and will make roads safer, says the NZ Transport Agency.
Many people in Porirua instinctively follow the new give way system, believing the new rules are existing law, Porirua City Council road safety co- ordinator Mark Kairua says.
‘‘ People are already doing it without knowing they’re doing it,’’ he says.
A classic example is where a small side road meets a large road at a T-intersection.
New rules: From March 25 give way rules change. Cars turning right must give way to cars turning left, and turning cars on the top of a T-intersection have right of way over cars on side roads.
No worries: No crashes are expected after the switch to new give way rules, because many people are following the new rules already, says Porirua City Council road safety co-ordinator Mark Kairua.
