Club takes ti­tle for first time

The Ngati­toa women’s premier 1 ten­nis team have taken out the Ka­t­rina Mi­haere Cup in the re­gional in­ter­club com­pe­ti­tion.

The event is con­tested over the sum­mer sea­son by clubs from Kapi Mana, Welling­ton and Hutt Val­ley.

The Ngati­toa team is Shaani Te Mata-frost, Sade Atkinson, Kelly South­wood, Tracey Epps, Me­gan Small and Dana Hiri, five of whom are still un­der 19 years old.

It is the first time the Ngati­toa club has won the top grade in in­ter­club and is the first time in over a decade that a Porirua club has won the top grade.

Ngati­toa was placed third be­fore Christ­mas but lifted their game in the new year. They faced Welling­ton Ten­nis Club in the grand final, which they took out 4-2. Af­ter shar­ing the dou­bles, the lo­cal club won three of the four sin­gles matches.
