Tainted vision

Kapi-Mana News - - OPINION -

Editor,

Everyone is going to love Porirua’s mayor Nick Leggett’s brave new vision for the city. Not!

Fewer public toilets when there is a serious lack already is madness; not cleaning them is serious.

Fewer rubbish bins, reduced sweeping and reduced library hours will turn the city into a dump and it won’t reduce child poverty and disease. Certainly literacy will be affected if libraries are cut back.

The proposed development around the harbour will make matters worse and anyone who lives in the area will know that the harbour is subject to violent weather including major winds.

Increased landfill costs and less information outside the internet are also backward steps.

I quite like the canopies now they have been modified. Why don’t they leave them alone?

Hopefully Nick Smith’s plan to cut back the scope of council functions to the basics will become law and quickly. It worked well in New Zealand once and it still works well in Australia.

ANNE PERRY, Titahi Bay.
