Safety on parade

Educating children to be safe on the roads is the theme behind Movin’ March, which culminates in a parade this Friday.

‘‘Our mokopuna and children are using the painted zebra crossings, yet they’re still being hit by vehicles,’’ Porirua City Council road safety co- ordinator Mark Kairua said.

The campaign particularly targets young children.

Mr Kairua said walking to school was a wonderful way for children to experience their world while practising road safety and socialising with their friends.

This Friday will see the campaign conclude here with the Porirua Movin’ March Parade. Schools have been asked to create a road safety banner, chant or slogan. The best chant or slogan will win high- visibility school bag covers for all students in that school.

The parade begins at 10.30am at Elim Church on Heriot Dr, passes Bunnings, on to Hagley St and down to Te Rauparaha Park. There will be road safety tasks at the park or Arena, depending on the weather.
