Vikings out for revenge in opener
The Porirua Vikings kick off the new Wellington Rugby League season under lights at Porirua Park this Friday and have a score to settle.
Te Aroha Eels caused a major upset by pipping the Vikings by one point in the premier grade grand final last year and will travel to Porirua to see if they can get their title defence off to a winning start.
The Vikings, under new coach Peter Rikiriki, will have about seven new players in their ranks, but club president Bernie Wood is confident they will begin strongly.
‘‘We’re going through some big changes in terms of personnel on the field, so it will be a challenge, but Te Aroha are coming into the lion’s den. What better way to start the new season than a grand final replay?’’
Mr Wood expects a big walk-up crowd. It costs $5 for adults and children are free. The reserve grade match is scheduled for 6pm, with the premiers kicking off at 7.30pm.
Three more Vikings games will be Friday night fixtures at Porirua Park – April 13 (against Wainuiomata), April 20 (St George) and May 4 (Petone).
