Six young magnolia trees were hacked to pieces under the canopies at the end of March.

The vandalism occurred overnight on Thursday, March 29.

The trees, which bordered a playground on Hartham Pl North, were three years old and about five metres tall, Porirua City Council spokeswoman Barbara Bercic says.

They cost $1000 each and will be replaced by the end of this month.

Vandalism of this sort is sad but luckily doesn’t happen often, Canopy Connection manager Eric Jones says.

‘‘It’s not common but it’s pretty sad to see that sort of stuff occur.’’

The trees helped attract custom under the canopies, he says.

‘‘We want to make it attractive and lovely to visit so when this sort of thing happens it’s a bit upsetting.’’

Hacked: The destruction of six magnolia trees is upsetting as they attracted custom under the canopies, says CBD business lobbyist Eric Jones.
