Al­co­hol is a fac­tor in a third of crimes in Porirua and na­tion­wide.

Off-li­cences sup­ply 70 per cent of the booze that leads to crime.

Half of all se­ri­ous vi­o­lence and an­ti­so­cial crimes in­volve al­co­hol.

A third of fam­ily vi­o­lence crimes are fu­elled by al­co­hol.

A quar­ter of prop­erty crimes (such as bur­glary) in­volve al­co­hol.

Al­co­hol has a so­cial cost of $4.4 bil­lion to New Zealand, 68 per cent of the to­tal so­cial cost of crime.
